This unit will focus on the political, social and cultural development of the former colonial territories of Portugal, which achieved their independence in 1975. Particular emphasis will be placed on Angola and Mozambique, the nature of the political regimes that replaced the outgoing Portuguese administration, their successes and failures, their involvement in Cold War politics, and their democratic transitions. There will also be opportunities to study the smaller lusophone African countries, as well as the recent history of East Timor.
