This course will focus on some key moments in the history of Brazilian cinema and the ways in which film has sought to articulate important aspects and concerns of Brazilian society since the 1950s. Key themes include: cinema and urban and rural popular culture; social protest; national identity; modernity; race; violence and social exclusion.
