This unit offers training in a range of the most important skills necessary for the study of the Middle Ages and the early modern period. An integrated series of seminars comprises one or more classes on the following: bibliographical orientation (guidance on locating and using research tools); national and local manuscript and archival resources (guidance on locating material in British archives); medieval manuscripts in Bristol University Library (an introduction to Bristol's own collection); Latin and English palaeography (how medieval manuscripts were written); diplomatic (the study of charters); codicology (the study of medieval books); chronology (medieval reckonings of time).
