This unit will examine some of Cervantes's key literary works as documents in which an unusually widely travelled observer repsonded to numerous shifts in Mediterranean Europe at a time when Spain was the greatest power on earth. The unit will use a selection Cervantes's highly enjoyable literary works as historical sources that shed light on the social and cultural complexities of the early modern Hispanic world. It will also place these works in the wider context of some key themes in early modern intellectual history.
