This unit is designed for second year law students preparing to spend their next year studying law in another country. Elements include: functions and methods of comparative law; characteristics of different legal families; case law and statutory interpretation; the status and role of constitutional courts; federalism and minority rights; the structure of administrative law; the law of contract (contractual freedom and capacity, formation, formal requirements, and indicia of seriousness); the law of tort (general conceptions of fault, strict liability, and vicarious liability).
