Land use is a finite resource. This unit examines the regulation of land use through Town and Country Planning from both public and private law perspectives. Students consider the legal processes through which national economic, environmental and social objectives are translated into detailed plans covering every hectare of England; the processes through which individual changes in the use of land and buildings are regulated; protection of special resources including historic buildings, green belts and mineral resources; and the control of problem activities e.g. hazardous waste. The unit will explore topical local or national problems. The focus is upon UK law. The unit concentrates upon core issues: strategic planning; development control; enforcement; planning gain, appeals, environmental assessment, planning gain.
