The focus of the unit is on real life issues relating to family creation and family breakdown which are explored theoretically, through socio-legal and sociological research and case law. Topics and issues examined include:- marriage and its equivalent for same sex couples - civil partnership; the law concerning the ending of marriage and civil partnership (nullity, divorce and dissolution) and its development; legal responses to family violence; the recognition of informal 'living together' relationships and the division of property when relationships end. A second focus is the regulation of parenthood and the protection of children including: - becoming a parent in law; the rights and duties of parents, legal and social responses to disputes between separated parents; the financial support of children by parents; state powers and duties to protect children and the orders which can be made when children have to be removed from their parents.
