This unit covers a selection of topics in financial services law, laying particular emphasis on the economic context in which the regulation of financial services takes place. Although a basic understanding of economics may prove useful, it is not essential. Throughout, the focus will be on English law, but a comparative aspect will be introduced where appropriate. Topics covered include: nature and function(s) of financial services; justifications for and methods of regulation; regulatory framework established by the Financial Services and Markets Act 2000; the role of the regulatory bodies; the public distribution of securities; substantial acquisitions $z takeovers and the market for corporate control; market abuses; financial diversification (conflicts of interest and systemic risk).
