This unit is made up of two parts: CAD and Computing. CAD: The aim is to introduce the student to CAD and to applications and current industrial practice in the subject. This unit consists of the following: CAD Project - The principles of geometric modelling and product visualisation are exploited through conceptual design of a royal crest and casing for an automatic chip sorting machine using the Faculty CAE facilities. Computing: In-depth programming project - During the first six laboratory sessions, students will be required to undertake a computer-based project, during which they will develop a model of an engineering or scientific system. The models will be developed in the Matlab environment. Supporting notes are provided for each project. These projects will be assessed during the sixth session. Introduction to Simulink - During the final two laboratory sessions, students will be given a brief introduction to Simulink.
