This unit explores the construction of racial, regional and national identities in post-colonial Latin America, focusing on nineteenth-centry Chile and Argentina. Using a wide range of primary sources, such as letters, memoirs, oral testimonies, travel writing and newspapers, and drawing on key secondary literature from the fields of history, anthropology and literary studies, students will examine the process of internal colonisation in these two countries. Specifically, they will investigate the occupation and incorporation of indigenous territories and peoples, from the multiple perspectives of the colonisers and the colonised.
