Cardiovascular disease (CVD) is a major Public Health problem and the leading cause of death worldwide. Mortality rates in the UK are amongst the highest found. Diet and lifestyle are cornerstones in the prevention and treatment of both coronary heart disease and cerebrovascular disease. The evidence base for safe and effective lifestyle interventions is growing and registered health practitioners need to maintain up to date knowledge and skills to assist in clinical practice, teaching and research in this constantly evolving and specialised field. In this unit students will critically review and evaluate new research and developments for the holistic health care management of CVD including diet, physical activity and smoking cessation. It will also help equip practitioners with the behavioural change theory and skills necessary to facilitate appropriate lifestyle modifications.
