Detailed examination of one or more of the dialogues of Plato, attending primarily to philosophical-argumentative content, and to literary and historical factors where relevant.
Aims:
To acquaint students in some detail with at least one substantial Platonic dialogue and with the important interpretative controversies in the secondary literature; and to enable students to deploy, in their reading of the dialogue(s), some of the philosophical techniques they have acquired in their first two years of philosophical study.
Students will have acquired a detailed knowledge of at least one substantial Platonic dialogue, and will be able to argue in an informed way about the main interpretative and philosophical issues it raises.

One three-hour exam, three questions from a choice of eight. The essay is formative work, does not count towards the mark for the course and is a requirement for credit.
