This course will be an introduction to contemporary theories of truth. We start from Tarski&s work on the undefinability of truth. Subsequently Tarski&s own theories of truth (the disquotational theory of truth and the compositional theory of truth) are treated. Then we go on to discuss more recent theories of truth, such as the Friedman-Sheard theory and the Kripke-Feferman theory. The emphasis will be on axiomatic (rather than model-theoretic) approaches to truth. But throughout the course we will keep the philosophical relevance and soundness of the proposed truth theories firmly in focus. In particular, close attention will be given to the relation between formal theories of truth on the one hand and the deflationist attitude to truth on the other hand.
