Description including Unit Aims

To explore some major works and writers of Czech poetry and drama in the nineteenth century; to consider the ideas and themes prevalent in Czech literature in the Revival and post-Revival periods. Macha's Romantic poem, Maj and Hlavacek's Symbolist collection, Mstiva kantilena, will normally feature, as representatives of Czech literature's contribution to two major 19th century poetry movements. Two works of drama will also be studied, by writers like Klicpera and the Mrstik brothers. The work of some other major Czech poets, like Havlicek, Erben, Neruda, Vrchlicky or Brezina, will also be introduced. The genre-based division of 19th century Czech literature in the Second Year takes into account students' ability to read in Czech; in this unit, some works will be prepared by students at home and read together in class.
