The first half of this unit will explore key examples of Gogol's short fiction and drama, with a particular focus on the Petersburg stories. The second half of the unit will explore Gogol's influence on subsequent Russian writing, through the comparative study of a number of short works by, for example, Chekhov, Zamiatin, Bulgakov, the post-Revolutionary Avant-garde, Terts, Dovlatov, or Tolstaia. Particular attention will be paid to the close reading of sections in Russian, and commentary skills will be tested as part of the unit's assessment.
