This unit explores particular Czech prose fiction and verse written in the period between the establishment of an independent Czechoslovakia and the Communist takeover, traditionally regarded as a high point in Czech literary culture. The unit will explore works reflecting the turbulent aesthetic and political debates of the period, including prose by Hasek, Capek, Ladislav Klima and Vancura and verse by leading Avantgarde poets like Nezval and Seifert. Students will be encouraged, with guidance, to choose writers which reflect their own interests.
