This unit is designed to familiarise students with key spheres of social work practice, namely: Social work with adults; Social work with children and adolescents; Social work with homeless people and with those who misuse legal and illegal substances. Students will develop a critical understanding of the variety of reasons that bring some members of the above groups into contact with social work agencies. It will provide students with a broad knowledge of contemporary services in each of the above areas, and familiarise them with the relevant legislative and policy frameworks in England and Wales. It will provide a critical analysis of key theoretical perspectives and explanatory frameworks relevant to understanding the social work role in relation to each area of work, including the ways in which oppression and discrimination impact on the organisation and delivery of services, and outcomes for service users.
