Description including Unit Aims

Part one (Understanding Oppression) of this three-part unit provides students with a conceptual framework for understanding oppression, power relationships and liberation movements. Through a series of workshops, students will have opportunities to develop their understanding of how oppression impacts on people using social services, professional helpers, and on the profile of service provision. It will focus on racism, sexism, religion, class, sexual orientation, disability and ageism. Part two (Social Work Methods) takes place in Term Two and comprises a lecture series covering key theories about effective ways of helping that are used in social work practice. More advanced courses follow in year two. Part three (Case and Project Discussions) takes place in terms two and three, when students are spending three days a week in practice. It provides a structured approach to the integration of research, theory and practice, including (but not confined to) material covered in parts one and two.
