This unit is designed to provide social workers with relevant knowledge of social theory, research and research strategies from the core social sciences. This is essential to their ability to make accurate and apposite assessments of a range of social problems. Students will be introduced to the central disciplinary concerns of social policy, sociology and developmental psychology. They will be provided with key information regarding contemporary British social structure (e.g. patterns of inequality and disadvantage), recent British social policy and current best evidence on developmental psychology. The course will examine particular issues from the perspective of each discipline, in part to illuminate the issue, in part to clarify the structure and contribution of each. Topics will include ethnicity, poverty, mental illness. Other parts of the course will focus on pivotal issues and concepts within each discipline.
