This unit begins with a series of workshops designed to develop students' critical thinking skills. Scheduled in week one it is designed to ensure that students are aware of the essential ingredients of rigorous debate and high quality decision making, and thereby to underpin their learning throughout the programme. This will provide a sound basis for the second part of the unit, delivered two terms later, which introduces students to key issues in the design and implementation of research in the social sciences. This series will cover a range of research methods, encompassing those traditionally referred to as 'qualitative' and 'quantitative'. As well as enabling students critically to appraise research, this part of the unit is specifically designed to support the students in their choice of, and planning for, their dissertation in the second year.
