Description including Unit Aims

In this unit students will have a chance to study one of the most influential Hindu texts, the Bhagavad Gita (Song of the Lord), looking in some detail at its cultural and philosophical background as well as its main teachings. We shall then examine the contrasting theologies/philosophies of Samkara (c 8th century) and Ramanuja (llth-12th centuries). A common thread running through this unit will be the tensions in classical Indian thought between monism (one absolute reality) and monotheism (one supreme God).
