Description including Unit Aims

This unit is an introductory historical survey of Hinduism from the earliest times to the present day. The unit covers problems of definition (the creation of 'Hinduism'), the religion of the Indus-Valley Civilisation, early and later Vedic religion (including the social divisions of class and caste), the Upanisads, Bhagavad Gita, Vaisnavism, Saivism, Saktism, Hindu Tantra, and some modern personalities and developments (such as Gandhi, and the rise of Hindu nationalism).
