Description including Unit Aims

This unit will examine the principal non-intrusive recording and investigative techniques used in British field archaeology to locate, survey and record archaeological sites. It will investigate the application of these methods and their suitability according to local conditions. Students will be introduced to the techniques of fieldwalking, aerial photography, historic maps, map regression analysis, NMR's, SMR's, HER's, earthwork and building surveys, geophysical and geochemical surveys, analysis of finds scatters, landscape archaeology and writing an archaeological report or desk-top assessment.
