This unit looks at the wide range of cultures in Latin America, covering rural and urban populations, indigenous groups and black communities in the Andean, Amazon and coastal areas. Latin America is striking for both its rich ethnographic diversity and its extreme social inequalities, which are rooted in a complex mixture of indigenous, African and European peoples. The unit takes a thematic approach to this diversity by focusing each week on different aspects of social life, such as religion, kinship, sexuality, music and dance, race and ethnicity, and social movements. Students will learn about different peoples from across the region while also having the chance to develop specialist knowledge in certain areas.
