Description including Unit Aims

This unit will broadly cover the history, work and development of Botanic Gardens. The unit will look at the work of Botanic Gardens world-wide and emphasis will be given to how modern Botanic Gardens operate and develop. The unit will look at the role of Botanic Gardens Conservation International, the Botanic Gardens Education Network and PlantNet as networking organisations facilitating the work of Botanic gardens.

Intended Learning Outcomes

The students awareness of the range and extent to which the history and background of botanical and horticultural topics inform the understanding of garden history and landscaping will be developed. The unit should contribute complementary knowledge to enrich and extend the cultural, conservation and educative aspects of the mandatory units, and to enable students to investigate the topic and cognate areas in more depth.

Teaching Information

Seminars and site visits over 5 weeks (10 hours).

Assessment Information

An assessed seminar paper from which a short essay (3,500 words) is submitted.
