Professional placement with heritage or archaeological organisation of museum whose work of collections include materials associated with 20th century conflict. The placement will allow the student to gain hands-on research experience and to develop professional networks beyond the University.
Aims:
The Unit will provide direct practical experience in conflict archaeology, through a period of work-placement in an appropriate organisation whose work includes 20th century conflict. Examples of the experience will range from handling artefacts and collections; planning exhibitions; developing media, to recording landscapes and buildings. It might also include participation on an archaeological excavation. The Units aim is to provide the student with the appropriate level of practical skills that are matched to their particular interest and career goals.
The student will select the placement in discussion with the PD, and will be responsible for contacting the organisation. The student will spend 6 weeks on the placement. The PD will discuss with the organisation the aims and outcomes expected and ensure that the organisation complies with appropriate levels of working conditions, health and safety and insurance cover.
On completion of the placement, the organisation will be asked to write a short report on the students progress and activities. The student will be asked to compile report / dossier on their activities of around 3000 words, and this will form the basis of a Viva at the end of the placement, conducted by a panel, including the PD (s) and at least one other member of staff. The overall mark for the unit will be arrived at on the basis of all the information available to the panel.
