Description including Unit Aims

This will establish the competent and appropriate use of counselling skills used within Audiology, with particular reference to the management of change.

Aims:

  • To establish the competent and appropriate use of counselling skills, with particular reference to a developmental skills model and the management of change
  • To provide students with an understanding of theories and philosophies underpinning the developmental skills model
  • To encourage an appreciation of counselling skills issues and ethics within students’ own settings and roles

Intended Learning Outcomes

By the end of the Unit students will be able to:

  1. Recognise the difference between “counselling” and the use of “counselling skills”
  2. Demonstrate their use of counselling skills
  3. Recognise when the use of counselling skills is appropriate within their own settings
  4. Demonstrate an understanding of the relevance of theory to practice
  5. Apply basic cognitive techniques to case studies
  6. Recognise the ethical issues involved in the use of counselling skills

Teaching Information

The module is taught experientially, in the belief that individuals learn skills by doing. Students are expected to engage in a process where they are prepared to take part in activities as a means of learning. Group work will provide an opportunity for integration of learning and the development of individual counselling skills. Students are encouraged to take responsibility for their own learning throughout the course with the aid of tutorial support.

Demonstrate their understanding of counselling skills through peer review (30%) Complete a written assignment (2,000 words) (70%)
