Description including Unit Aims

This unit builds on the Level C unit, Introduction to Psychology for Audiologists. It extends the psychological perspectives on topics such as basic neuroanatomy, language, perception, social cognition, rehabilitation and development, to enhance students' understanding of and ability in professional working.

Aims:

To provide students with an introduction to (1) major clinical psychological problems and developmental disorders likely to be encountered when working with clients (2) social psychological concepts fundamental to understanding working with clients and other professionals.

Intended Learning Outcomes

By the end of the module students will be able to:

  • Describe major clinical psychological problems including anxiety, depression, schizophrenia, Alzheimer’s disease and understand their implications for professionals working with clients
  • Describe the way in which different learning disabilities impact on working with clients
  • Describe social cognition models of self-presentation, attitude change, persuasion and health behaviour and understand their implications for professionals working with clients
  • Describe intragroup dynamics including those relating to power, conformity and innovation and understand their implications for team-working with other professionals
  • Describe intergroup dynamics including those relating to power, conflict and communication and understand their implications for both inter-professional and client-professional work
