This unit examines a wider range of issues affecting contemporary Japan, including modern history, economic success/stagnation, the employment system, aging population, gender relations, poverty and Japan's political role in East Asia and the world. Not only are Japanese companies influential in the global economy, but also Japanese popular culture (manga, fashion, games) is gaining increasing international popularity. Many scholars have closely examined Japanese social, economic and political systems and compared them with Western or other East Asian systems and found that Japan makes a unique yet typical model of modernisation and post modernisation. This unit is open to students from any disciplinary background, who want to gain a deeper understanding of Japan in comparison with other contemporary societies.
