The period from the end of the third to the end of the fourth century AD saw some of the most important religious changes of world history. At the start of this period we see the first state sponsored persecution of Christians by the Roman authorities; by the end Christianity was well on its way to establishing itself as the religion of the Roman empire. In the past this transition has been presented as a story of Christian triumph over failing Graeco-Roman religions. This course will seek to challenge this view and to find a more sophisticated way to understand the religious changes taking place at this time.
