This unit provides a thorough, basic introduction to deaflife in the UK today, by addressing the situation of deaf people and the deaf Community within hearing society. It will consider deafness as a social construction and a medical condition and the effect of hearing society upon deaf people. It will also explore the reality of the deaf community and the identifying features of deaf culture within the framework of Deafhood. By the end of this unit, students will have a working understanding of the major causes of deafness as a physical condition, and of the attitudes that lead to the current social construction of deafness. Students will distinguish between deafness as a medical condition and Deafhood. This unit is a foundation for further units in Deaf Studies.
