Description including Unit Aims

The unit will explore the ways that BSL varies according to regional and social identities of signers. Social dialects and situational variants will be identified and described and the reasons for their differences considered. Students will be introduced to the vocabulary, grammar and style of different BSL varieties. The relationship between BSL and English will be discussed, with particular reference to the effect of bilingualism and the status of a minority language on BSL and its phonology, vocabulary and grammar. NOTE: It is possible that this unit may be taught in BSL. Students considering taking this unit should consult the unit director.
