This unit will explore topics of sign linguistics in more depth. The methodology for the collection of good linguistic and sociolinguistic data for sign languages will be studied. The unit will consider both the structure and use of BSL. It will present theories on sign phonology, morphology, and syntax (including sign order and the function of simultaniety. The use of space in signed languages, and the role of iconicity and isomorphism in the productive lexicon will be examined in depth. The role of metaphor in BSL will also be considered. This unit will also explore in depth the relationship between gesture and sign language, and also the ways in which language modality (ie whether a language is spoken or signed) affect the structure and use of language. Finally we will also explore how many of these issues affect the development of signed languages, both within individuals and within societies. Note: It is possible that this unit may be taught in BSL.
