Description including Unit Aims

The Teaching Unit comprises 3 Elements: 1. Oral Medicine and Pathology(including Clinical Pharmacology) 2. Oral and Dental Radiography and Radiology 3. Oral Microbiology The Teaching Unit provides didactic and clinical teaching of disorders of the teeth and oro-facial tissues to undergraduates in their 2nd (Radiation Protection and Introduction to Dental Radiology), 4th (Oral Disease Course; Dental Radiology) and 5th (Integrated Clinical Teaching Course) years. There follows 3 terms of practical instruction (Summer term 4th year; Autumn term 5th year; Spring term 5th year) where the essence of diagnosis and disease management is taught on the Primary Care Unit, in Consultant Clinics and in the Radiology Unit. The general aim of the Teaching Unit is to promote an interest in, and knowledge of, oral disease within the context of oral health as part of total body health. The general objective of the Teaching Unit is to produce a dental surgeon competent in the diagnosis and management of oral disease and who has a caring and sympathetic attitude towards patients.
