Description including Unit Aims

The unit gives a basic introduction to the principles of volcanology. It will cover major kinds of valcano and volcanic eruption from the perspective of eruption dynamics. It will also cover topics such as scientific methods of monitoring active volcanoes and assessment of volcanic hazards. The eruption of the Soufriere Hills Volcano (1995 - 2001) will form an important case history. The rationale for the course is that volcanology is a major research theme of the department and teaching volcanology from a dynamical viewpoint provides many opportunities for teaching basic scientific skills in numeracy and for developing students intuition for physical processes. The unit also introduces students to methods of hazard and risk assessments for natural phenomena.
