Almost every palaeontologist employed in industry is a micropalaeontologist and yet few university palaeontology courses address microfossil groups and their applications within the Earth Sciences. This unit aims to redress the balance through an introduction to the major microfossil groups, as well as the techniques employed in their industrial and academic application in areas as diverse as palaeogeography, palaeoclimatology, palaeoceanography, palaeoecology, thermal maturation studies, biostratigraphy, and in unravelling the nature of biological events, from the origin of life to mass extinction.
