This unit provides supported learning about dynamic environmental processes which present risk to populations, building on the broad overview provided in the taught component of the Science of Natural Hazards MRes programme with a focus on the specific topic areas of the planned research projects. It develops foundational research competence and a suite of highly transferable skills, equipping the students to embark on their independent Masters dissertation projects. Students benefit from cooperative group working and individual supervision. Key activities in their Phase 1 project are (i)data acquisition and collation, (ii) development of data handling skills, and (iii) the development of statistical and scentific literature syntheses skills. The students will prepare a report to include a critical literature review and an account of their data collation and methodological development, as the basis for the analysis and interpretation to be carried out in the subsequent dissertation project.
