The unit is the second of two units which aim to equip teachers to take and develop leadership roles in Citizenship in secondary schools and post-16 education settings. Together with the first unit, (The Teaching of Citizenship: Personal and Curriculum Review), it provides the basis for meeting DfES standards for the teaching of Citizenship. This unit is principally concerned with planning, conducting, documenting and evaluating a school-based development project in Citizenship education that is designed to improve the effectiveness of teaching and learning in Citizenship in participants& own institutions, and to enable participants to increase their knowledge and understanding of curriculum leadership roles and skills. It is also designed to provide UK teachers who have not engaged in action research at a formal level with experience of doing so, and analysing pedagogical, professional, methodological or theoretical issues arising from such curriculum development work.
