This unit aims to inform the student of the basic concepts of electrical engineering. The unit will use a high level approach in order to highlight the diversity of disciplines, ranging from high power networks to micro-control systems, involved in electrical engineering. Although many of the fundamental concepts will be studied, the second year electrical engineering units will supply more of the detail and rigorous analysis. Teaching will be based on an applications approach where electrical equipment already familiar to the student will be used to illustrate the salient information. It is further intended that teaching will make extensive use of demonstrations.
The student will have an appreciation of the elements that comprise a typical electrical engineering system. Through the use of demonstrations, the student will have a practical as well as theoretical appreciation of system elements and will be able to relate topics studied to everyday examples. It is also intended that the unit emphasises the general techniques, such as drawing diagrams and making simple calculations, that are useful both in practical design and examination situations.
