Description including Unit Aims

The aim of this unit is to introduce the features of a modern computer, and how they impact on the performance of a computer. Modern computer architectures are considered from the viewpoint of the compiler interface and the impact the demands of the operating system and high-level language have on the structure of computers. The issues are addressed at three levels: the realisation level, the implementation level and the architectural level.
