An understanding of the management of organisations is highly desirable for those wishing to work in positions of responsibility in industry, commerce, or the not-for-profit or public sectors.
The unit will provide grounding in management and organisational theory, and will equip students with an understanding of the nature of managerial work and of the environment in which managers operate. The course is an academic course which covers the theory rather than the practice of management, so the course is not designed to develop management skills. However, it is hoped that students taking the unit will develop a critical understanding of the complex nature of effective management, which will help them to be better managers themselves. It will also help them to appreciate the pros and cons of different management styles and so, different potential employers.
In the second term the course will include tasters of different areas of the management function and their associated academic fields, such as Marketing, Strategic Management and Project Management. These tasters will give students initial insights into these fields which should be beneficial in future job roles, but it is also hoped that they may spark interest for further study.
Guest lecturers will feature during the course.
