Description including Unit Aims

This unit introduces systems modelling by using UML (Unified Modelling Language) to describe a wide range of engineering systems with which students are already familiar, e.g. household appliances and systems, petrol stations. Students will learn how to describe the relationships and classes that are an important way of characterising such systems in the early stages of design. This is essentially the Analysis stage of the design of computer systems, but is much wider in that it allows the modelling of all types of system. A set of case studies are selected each year to illustrate the different ways in which different engineering disciplines approach design and to give an introduction to the sort of topics covered in those disciplines. The idea is to help the students to understand what is meant by design and to help them choose their specialisation for year 2.
