For much of this century, textual and literary criticism have been kept apart. Now, with theories suggesting three versions of Hamlet and two of King Lear, the textual debate is at the centre of literary criticism. This unit will approach the four tragedies, Hamlet, Othello, King Lear, and Macbeth by way of studies of a) the textual debate and critical reception b) theories of tragedy and c) redactions and rewriting/revisi ons of the plays.
