This unit focuses on a selection of poems and poetic passages from Classical (Greek and Roman) literature which have been translated or adapted by distinguished English and American poets, and which, as a result, have come to constitute part of the English poetic tradition. The emphasis is on the English poetry which has resulted from this process of $making it new&, rather than on the $accuracy& of the translations as renderings of their originals, but use is made of plain prose $cribs& to identify those passages where the English poet has departed markedly from his or her source. Some consideration is also given to the principles and theory of translation employed by English poets.
