This unit (taught in English) traces the main developments in the evolution of the French language from Latin. For the first half of the unit, the focus is on external history: the various political, social and cultural forces which have helped to shape patterns of language use in France over the past two thousand years. Thereafter internal history is covered, exploring the changes which have occurred in the actual structure of the language, in particular, major developments in vocabulary and pronunciation.
