Description including Unit Aims

The aim of this unit is to identify and explore areas of change in contemporary French, a living language that is not static but constantly evolving in all areas of its structure. Various aspects of pronunciation, grammar and lexicon (e.g. the growth of franglais) are studied and their possible causation investigated. Throughout, the facts observed are considered in the light of the basic approaches developed in theoretical linguistics. Guidance to and understanding of these approaches is given at the beginning of the unit.
