This course traces the complex and evolving relationship between France and the Maghreb from the colonial period to the present day. It asks how the legacy of colonial rule and war have shaped and influenced attitudes towards immigration in contemporary France, and examines the often contentious issues of nationality, identity and culture for individuals of Maghrebi origin in contemporary France. The course is divided into two interrelated sections. The first section will deal with histories and memories, the second with identities and cultures.
