A seminar of about 10 sessions, each led by a different member of the physical and human academic staff or outside speakers. The purpose of the seminars is to bring together research interests across the School that impact in different ways on the public domain, and outside speakers (e.g. from industry, the media, environmental lobby and interest groups), where business concerns the interface between (environmental) science and the wider society. They will further students& understanding of the ways in which scientific information, knowledge and discovery, especially in the environmental sciences, is both the consequence of, and input to, levels of awareness and decision-making at a collective and individual level within society. The topics will reflect current research in the School and the salience of different scientific issues in the public realm. Possible themes to be explored are likely to come from such fields as: the public face of scientific research (the role of the media, press, internet); the regulation of human activities and formulation of public policy in the light of supposed environmental scientific knowledge; and the role of environmental risk-taking and the acceptance of environmental uncertainty in societal and individual actions.
