The unit aims to provide insight into how the natural environment has affected humans and society in the past and the potential impact of future climate change.
Part 1: In 8 lectures we will discuss the interactions between the environment and humans in the past on various time scales. This part of the course will draw together information from archaeological, geological and palaeo-climate models to examine how hominids/humans have responded and interacted with climate and environmental change. It will cover topics such as whether dramatic changes in the East African landscape can be linked to hominid evolution, to the impacts of Mega-droughts on early civilizations.
Part 2: consists of 12 seminars on various aspects of current and future climate change impacts. Typical subjects for seminars will include land use change, climate change policy, future hydrologic changes and economics of climate change.
