This unit will introduce students to new geographies of political economy. Utilising a political economy approach to geographical analysis in which the social and spatial inequalities of global capitalism are a key focus it will clarify the social processes, structures and causes underlying capitalist development. In particular, the unit focuses upon a key agent of capitalism: labour. 'Gender' will be mobilised as a substantive concern and an analytical lens through which to view the dynamic relations between social, cultural, political and economic dimensions of contemporary capitalist formations. Key concepts and developments in feminist theoretical contributions to political economy will be addressed throughout the module. Part 1 of the unit looks at the construction of gender in the course of paid employment, unpaid labour, the welfare state and the emerging 'workfarist' - state. Part 2 focuses on Marxist feminist and post-structural contributions to rethinking social reproduction.
